Description: The experimental Neutrinos and Dark Matter group at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a postdoctoral position. Both U.S. citizenship and a Ph.D. in particle or nuclear physics are required.

The successful candidate will participate in the Double Chooz neutrino oscillation experiment, and in addition will work on development of small neutrino detectors for use in nuclear non-proliferation monitoring in collaboration with LLNL.

Double Chooz is a reactor neutrino experiment in France that began operating last year with one far detector. A second near detector is now under construction to begin operation soon. We recently published our first result on the measurement of the neutrino mixing angle Theta 13 – a crucial parameter for enabling future experiments that will look for evidence of CP violation in neutrinos. The successful candidate will have the exciting opportunity to analyze the first full Double Chooz data set from both detectors.

In addition, UC Davis is partnered with LLNL to develop compact neutrino detectors to be deployed at commercial and research reactors to monitor compliance with nuclear non-proliferation agreements. We have deployed detectors at a commercial plant in Southern California and are now in the process of designing and constructing a detector for deployment at a new reactor in Canada. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with us to create new and innovative technology that push the state of the art in reactor neutrino detection. This position will also involve some teaching and course development at UCD in conjunction with our Nuclear Science Summer School.
